NUH Children Wards: My experience
author:ShearesVC
Well... I'll write some of my experience in the event here, hehe wanna give the readers something different this time (if there is any)
Well, during all the 3 days of the event, I think all of us have met with a bunch of kids, each with different personality of their own, some of them, well, you don't need to do anything, just sit there and they will get high on whatever stuff you are doing with them. The other type, is the opposite one, you sit there, you look at them, they stare back at you and then continue to play their PSP. The 2nd type of kid, in my experience, is a little hard to interact with, unless you try VERY HARD to.
I went to NUH on the 1st day, 2 groups of volunteers. Well, during that 2 hours, I met with, well, 4 different people. 3 kids, and 1 teenager (weird right, a 17-year-old teenager in a children ward). Out of the 4 patients, well, I found that I could interact most easily with the 17-year-old teenager. Well, we talked about Dota, about chasing girls, about school life (he's going to poly btw).
The other kids, we folded some origamis with them, the 2 kids looked interested and chatted happily with us. The last kid (called Jonathan), haha... I could still remember the awkward atmosphere in the ward (6 volunteers standing around a bed). One of the volunteer taught him how to fold origami (as what we did with the other kids), well, in Jonathan's case, he was holding his PSP, and stared blankly at the volunteer, looked disinterested, and I think he will fall to sleep any time LOL. Well, in the end, our group failed to "cheer" the kid up, and left, rather unwillingly (coz it was already 8pm).
Yesterday, a friend of mine (Jason) came into my room, excited, to tell me about his NUH experience. Well, I don't know what did he do there, but it was something like this: He and a kid both made a card, written on it is their names and telephone number, and they exchanged their cards. Yesterday, the kid phoned Jason, telling him that he has recovered and is leaving the hospital. Besides, the kid also asked him to keep his card properly cause he will treasure the card and keep it forever. Touching, right?
I feel thet each of us had some unique experience in the event (especially our dear Jason), everyone is different, everyone is interesting, everyone deserves care... so what's your experience?
